Four Ways to Simplify Your Web Design

In the world of web design, simple goes a long way. At Integrated IT Solutions, we know consumers have myriad choices online. We also know that the hardest battle can be winning their attention. Focus your efforts on designing a simple website that keeps clutter to a minimum and streamlines the user decision-making process to see a boost in traffic as well as results. Here’s how to hone in on the user experience and simplify web design.

1. Keep On-Screen Choices to a Bare Minimum

The more options and choices consumers see on a particular website, the more competition for attention and thus cognitive stress they encounter. By keeping your options to the minimum of what’s required on screen, you give customers a low stress, pleasant experience in which they are much more likely to answer the call to action provided. This rule applies not just to the amount of products or services that are shown on any given landing page, but also to secondary content like ads, widgets, or other sidebar tools. If you use too many of these add-ons, you end up watering down the main point and losing the attention of your visitors.

2. Be Consistent

The quantity of products shown on your website isn’t the only factor that counts when it comes to interface design. Consistency is equally important because it limits any distractions that site visitors might encounter. If you work in the clothing industry, for example, you wouldn’t put categories like “men” and “women” next to specific product groups like “tops” or “watches.” This creates unnecessary confusion and can even give you a lack of credibility. Make sure that your categories are consistent so users have no trouble navigating your site.

3. Create Ability to Browse Freely

Part of the fun of online shopping is the ability to browse freely. Even if you have a large breadth of products that you want to showcase, it’s best to keep them hidden until users go looking for them. Keep your search bar clear of elements that compete for visual attention, so users feel invited to dive in and explore. Give them the option to browse a dropdown or sidebar menu with simplified categories as a backup.

4. Cover Your Basic Bases

A great interface that covers all the basics and executes them well provides the grounds for a smooth decision-making process for users. When you design your site right, you’ll earn the attention of users and keep them engaged. Some of these fundamentals include:

  • Spacing: Give your elements sufficient space so nothing feels jumbled or crammed together.
  • Structure: Display information coherently and ensure users can intuitively access all content.
  • Layout: Show primary choices prominently and keep less important content to a minimum.
  • Color: Use color and contrast to your advantage by using them to highlight important decisions.

By considering the user decision-making process, you’ll be on the fast track to effective, simplified web design.
