Why Copying and Pasting AI Content Is A Bad Idea For Your Website Copy

One of the most common questions that I get lately is “can we just use ChatGPT for content?”.  The answer is not a simple yes or no, but a guide on how to use it properly.  You absolutely should not copy and paste content from any LLM AI service into your website to populate it and help get your site to rank.  We are now seeing pages crawled, but not indexed for most copy and paste AI content pages.  This is a critical signal that AI content does not fully pass Google’s authoritative signals.

The Do’s of AI Content For Websites

  1. Absolutely use ChatGPT to generate content ideas.
  2. Use ChatGPT to help build a structure.
  3. Use ChatGPT to help you identify a clear direction and audience.
  4. Use ChatGPT to help create an outline.
  5. Use ChatGPT to assist in changing tone.
  6. Use ChatGPT to help with stronger statements and support your point.

The Don’ts of AI Content For Websites

  1. Don’t enter basic prompts when generating content.
  2. Don’t copy and paste from ChatGPT without editing.
  3. Don’t trust ChatGPT with facts, always fact check.
  4. Don’t rely on ChatGPT, original thoughts and your experience are more valuable than AI content.
